Active B6 Pyridoxal is a source of vitamin 6 in the form of pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P). This form of P5P, the most biologically active, can catalyze more than 140 reactions. P5P is an important cofactor in: 1) fatty acid metabolism, including the production of the important omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids; 2) carbohydrate metabolism, including the transformation of glycogen into glucose; 3) amino acid metabolism, including the synthesis and conversion of neurotransmitters from tryptophan to niacin. Vitamin B6 deficiency reduces the production of niacin and increases the formation of the metabolite xanthurenic acid, which slows insulin activity. Low levels of vitamin B6 can also lead to increased synovial fluid between joints, which can lead to nerve compression.
