- Activated vitamin B12 and folic acid
B12 Folate is a combination of two water-soluble B vitamins, folate and vitamin B12. Folate and vitamin B12 have an interconnected function. They are essential for nutrient metabolism and are both necessary for the enzyme that produces methionine. They are also essential for maintaining red blood cell homeostasis, as they contribute to the formation of red blood cells. At the molecular level, folate's primary function is to donate methyl groups in key biochemical reactions. Adequate folate status is particularly important for the proper neural and cellular development of the fetal central nervous system. Folate promotes healthy cell differentiation during brain and spinal cord formation, helping to reduce the risk of neural tube defects when taken daily before becoming pregnant and during early pregnancy. Folate is provided in this formula as Metafolin®, the universally metabolized form of folate. Metafolin® is chemically identical to the active metabolite of folic acid, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). L-5-MTHF is the main natural form of folic acid in foods. As it avoids several steps of enzymatic activation, it can be used directly by the body and provides all the benefits of folic acid, regardless of functional or genetic variations. The vitamin B12 in this formula is provided in the form of methylcobalamin, the most bioavailable form of this vitamin.
