- Supports digestive functions
- Includes an acidic form of betaine to aid digestion
- Contains pepsin, a digestive enzyme
Betaine HCl and pepsin are natural components of gastric juice that make the assimilation and biological activity of nutrients possible. Betaine HCl is an acidic form of betaine that promotes optimal acidity of the gastric lumen; Pepsin is an enzyme that digests proteins and catalyzes the dissociation of peptide bonds. Both promote the solubilization of food particles and the healthy assimilation and utilization of nutrients, including protein, vitamin B12 and iron. Contact with gastric juices results in the breakdown of proteins and polysaccharides, making them more susceptible to the actions of hydrolytic enzymes in the duodenum and jejunum. With age, as stomach acid secretion decreases, betaine can help replace endogenous stomach acid production and help support optimal digestion.
