Bio B12 + Folic Acid includes a high dose of vitamin B12 to support macronutrient metabolism and prevent vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is an important cofactor in two enzymatic reactions: 1 methylmalonyl-CoA mutase which helps dissolve branched chains of amino acids and irregular chain fatty acids; 2 methionine synthase which is required for methyl transfer reactions, including the transformation of homocysteine to methionine for protein production. A daily intake of 400 mcg of folic acid during the first trimester can reduce neural tube defects by approximately 50%. Folic acid is a methyl group donor, and research indicates that improper methylation can cause neural tube defects. Similarly, a reduction in vitamin B12 or folic acid leads to an accumulation of homocysteine, which can inhibit methyl transfer reactions. Vitamin B12 enhances methionine synthesis and increases folic acid's ability to lower homocysteine levels for normal methyl metabolism. The vitamin is also necessary for the methylation of proteins that participate in the synthesis and maintenance of myelin, and vitamin deficiencies can lead to less production of the myelin sheath, which is a necessary material for normal functioning of the nervous system. Methionine synthase is necessary for the formation of red blood cells, and vitamin B12 deficiencies have been associated with the production of abnormally large and irregularly shaped blood cells.
