Butyrate is an important short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) produced naturally in the large intestine. It is considered an important source of energy for the epithelial cells that cover it. One of the key functions of the large intestine is the absorption of water and nutrients that may not have been assimilated earlier in the digestive process. Bacteria in the large intestine also help break down undigested elements, such as dietary fiber. Most butyrate in the large intestine is formed when bacteria ferment or break down dietary fiber to create butyrate and other SCFAs. Butyrate also provides a source of energy for the rest of the body: it is estimated that SCFAs can represent up to 5 to 15% of humans' daily calorie needs. Butyrate Complex provides SCFAs in the form of calcium or magnesium butyrate and is suitable for vegan diets.
