Inositol (or myo-inositol) is a vitamin B-like molecule often used to help regulate blood sugar, manage polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and manage mood disorders such as anxiety. Inositol is a precursor to phosphatidylinositol, which is at the heart of the phosphoinositide cycle. This cycle is essential to the brain's multiple signaling systems, transmitting messages from various hormones and neurotransmitters (brain messengers) to receptors located on the surface of nerve cells within the cell. Inositol improves the sensitivity of various receptors, which helps balance mood and blood sugar in PCOS.
Research suggests that high doses of inositol can treat symptoms of behavioral and compulsive disorders, particularly those related to mood imbalances and worry. Signaling systems dependent on the phosphoinositide system include neurotransmitters that are key targets for antidepressants. Recent research also supports the role of low doses of inositol in cellular defense and normal cell growth and differentiation, particularly in combination with I-P-6 (inositol phytate or hexaphosphate). People with poor blood sugar regulation, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or mood disorders like anxiety may benefit from inositol. This product is also useful for people concerned about healthy cell growth and differentiation.
This is a B vitamin that has recently been praised for its ability to support healthy mood balance and normal cell growth and differentiation. AOR offers inositol in capsules and powder, as different doses of inositol have different therapeutic effects. For people struggling with mood disorders, inositol powder is a new orthomolecular key that breaks the chains binding their minds.
As promising as the results of high-dose inositol studies may be, inositol powder is not a panacea for mental illness. Inositol is of no benefit in cases of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, in anergic schizophrenics, people suffering from Alzheimer's disease or autistic children. Indeed, high doses of inositol worsen attention deficit disorder in children. It appears that inositol is an effective nutritional support for people with disorders that usually respond to SSRI medications, not for those who do not. This could also be a plausible explanation for trial results that found that combining inositol supplementation with current SSRI use does not result in further improvement in people with depression, partially responsive compulsive disorder, or depression immune to the effects of the SSRIs themselves.
