- Support for female hormonal balance
FemGuard + Balance features the following ingredients:
Vitex extract (Vitex agnus castus): This is the most used plant worldwide to balance female hormones. This amphoteric plant lowers or raises hormone levels depending on individual needs. Since most women with hormonal imbalances lack progesterone, an increased action of progesterone from this plant facilitates the regularity of menstrual cycles and the optimal functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Flavonoids isolated from vitex have been shown to have anti-neoplastic activity and hypoprolactinemic effects.
Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa): Another botanical compound commonly used for women's health, black cohosh is traditionally used to alleviate the symptoms of menopause due to its mild phytoestrogenic action and modulation of luteinizing hormone (LH). Luteinizing hormone levels are greatly reduced by black cohosh extracts while follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels are not. Black cohosh has been shown in various studies to reduce hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness and thinning hair, sleep disturbances and emotional symptoms. Black cohosh extracts have been shown to maximize the effects of tamoxifen although stimulatory effects on estrogen receptor positive breast cancer cells could not be demonstrated. Extensive studies in Germany have found that black cohosh reduces symptoms of menopause and premenopause. The antispasmodic property of this herb can also relieve menstrual cramps.
Resveratrol (Polygonum cuspidatum): Although this plant is best known for its powerful cardioprotective and antioxidant properties as well as its anticarcinogenic properties, it is also a phytoestrogen. Resveratrol provides overall antioxidant protection and a safe hormone balancing effect, especially in women going through menopause and perimenopause.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), grape seed (Vitis vinifera), and green tea (Camellia sinensis): This herbal combination provides a broad antioxidant effect. Many of these potent compounds have been shown to have potential anticarcinogenic effects against female cancers. Designs for Health uses only the highest quality standardized botanicals, including unrivaled green tea extract with 50% EGCG.
DIM (diindolylmethane) and chrysin: These two ingredients were added because of their ability to safely optimize estrogen metabolism and neutralize unwanted proliferative effects. Inadequate conversion to estrogen by aromatase has been associated with certain types of breast cancer and other female cancers. Dietary indoles, found in Brassica plants such as cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, have been shown to provide protection against hormone-dependent cancers. According to studies, of all indole metabolites, diindolylmethane (DIM) provides the greatest protection against cancer. DIM has been reported to provide benefits in women suffering from perimenopausal symptoms, including PMS, painful or difficult periods, endometriosis, or cervical dysplasia. Women undergoing hormone replacement therapy may also benefit from DIM supplementation with improved estrogen metabolism and reduction in breast pain.
Calcium and Magnesium: Supplementation with these minerals has been shown to reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and may lead to more efficient enzyme activity, fewer cramps, and healthier bone density. As with all Designs for Health products, minerals are offered in their true Albion™ chelated form for increased bioavailability.
Vitamins B6, B12 and folate (as a NatureFolate™ blend): These nutrients are included to promote healthy cell differentiation, including cervical cells, to reduce the incidence of cervical dysplasia. Cervical cancer is a major health concern, with an estimated 1 in 149 Canadian women developing cancer in their lifetime. Regular gynecological check-ups and pap smears, combined with taking FemGuard + Balance, are a proactive approach to cancer prevention. In addition, these B vitamins lower homocysteine levels, a marker of heart disease which is a leading cause of death in women according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
