Flax is among the best sources of alpha-linolenic acid, a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, in addition to containing linolenic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid. Alpha-linolenic acid is metabolized by APE and DHA by the enzymes elongase and desaturase. While these enzymes also compete to metabolize linolenic acid through elongation and desaturation reactions, an input ratio of linolenic acid to alpha-linolenic acid less than 4:1 is favorable for the conversion of alpha-linolenic acid to long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Daily consumption of supplements containing flaxseed oil for more than eight weeks significantly increased stores of APE and DPA, a precursor of DHA and a possible storage form of APE, in erythrocyte membranes and plasma in adults. Fatty acids are also necessary for the proper structure and function of the skin, including protection against environmental factors and loss of electrolytes and water. Decreases in these fatty acid levels have been associated with epithelial cell dysfunction, including loss of moisture in the skin. Alpha-linolenic acid further contributes to maintaining optimal health through its role in maintaining the function of platelets and endothelial cells. Alpha-linolenic acid is more bioavailable in flaxseed oil compared to crushed or whole flaxseeds.
