In this formula, folate is provided in the form of Metafolin®, the natural and universally metabolized form of folate. Metafolin® is chemically identical to the active metabolite of folate found naturally in foods, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). Clinical evidence indicates that the bioavailability of Metafolin® is greater than that of folic acid. Adequate folate levels are important for red blood cell formation and protein metabolism. At the molecular level, folate's primary function is to donate methyl groups in key biochemical reactions. More specifically, this vitamin B is essential for the proper neural and cellular development of the central nervous system of the fetus. Research shows that taking supplements containing at least 400 mcg of folate daily before and during pregnancy helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
