Primrose oil is derived from evening primrose, a yellow flowering herb native to America. This natural source of omega-6 fatty acids helps maintain optimal health. The structure and function of skin, the body's largest organ, depends on fatty acids. Linoleic acid accounts for approximately 12% of the fatty acids in the skin. It is essential for maintaining the integrity of the epidermal barrier, which protects against environmental factors and the loss of electrolytes and water. Omega-6 fatty acid deficiencies are associated with epithelial cell dysfunction, including loss of moisture in the skin and eyes. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, daily consumption of supplements containing primrose oil for three months significantly improved skin firmness, elasticity, and protective barrier in adults with dry skin. Recent research indicates that long-term consumption of primrose oil may be necessary to improve skin health since it takes four weeks for skin cells to regenerate and a new fatty acid balance to be achieved.
