HMF Vaginal Health contains the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum KABP-061, a patented human strain that has unique properties allowing it to restore vaginal flora and strong adhesion to vaginal mucous membranes. In healthy women, lactobacilli are the predominant bacteria in the vaginal ecosystem; they have a strong influence on maintaining a balanced microbiota in the vagina by inhibiting the proliferation of unwanted bacterial species. By producing lactic acid, lactobacilli stabilize the physiological pH of the vagina and help the body's natural defense mechanisms curb the fungal proliferation that can cause vaginal infections. Additionally, by colonizing the vaginal cavity, they form a protective film that inhibits the growth of other harmful microorganisms. The probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum KABP-061 was chosen for its ability to acidify the vaginal environment and inhibit the growth of known pathogens that cause urinary tract infections (including E. coli, S. saprophyticus and P. mirabilis) and for its antibacterial properties against Candida albicans and Candida glabrata. In an open, prospective and comparative study, it was discovered that the use of the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum KABP-061, after antifungal treatment against vulvovaginal candidiasis, significantly reduced all vaginal symptoms assessed (leukorrhea, erythema, edema, tingling, itching, pain and bad odor) after 14 days. Healthy vaginal flora reduces the risk of fungal proliferation, which reduces the risk of infections. This was observed in the same study, which demonstrated that Lactobacillus plantarum KABP-061 helps reduce the number of cases of recurrence by 60% in women who suffer from recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.
