Although related to the basil we use in cooking, holy basil has different medicinal properties. Ocimum tenuiflorum (also known as Ocimum sanctum) is a medicinal plant with a long history of traditional use in India and Ayurvedic medicine. Traditionally, holy basil was used to treat malaria, diarrhea, dysentery, skin diseases, joint inflammations, painful eye diseases, chronic fever and insect bites. This is likely due to the many active constituents of holy basil, including tannins, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids that are responsible for its antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antispasmodic, analgesic, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, and cell-protective activities.
Today, holy basil is primarily used as an adaptogen, as it has been shown to induce relaxation, promote a feeling of calm, and reduce stress and bad mood. It has also been shown to reduce blood sugar and cholesterol in diabetic subjects. Animal studies have shown that it reduces the stress hormone cortisol.
AOR Holy Basil is an excellent option for people looking for an anti-stress herbal supplement with added benefits of blood sugar stabilization and cardiovascular health support.
